Gucci and Guess are the latest brands to get into a legal tussle over copyright/trademark infringement issues. Though Gucci filed a case against Guess in 2009, it was only last week that the case made its way to court. The Italian label owned by French conglomerate PPR is suing Guess over what it calls “a massive, complicated scheme to knock off Gucci’s best-known and iconic designs,” according to Gucci’s lawyer Louis Ederer. Guess is said to have mimic’s Gucci’s design of the G logo, the interlocking Gs hardware and a script font, as well as usage of Gucci’s banner colors, green and red. The Italian label claims that $221 million worth of Guess products infringed on Gucci’s designs. Guess’ lawyer countered that of the 1000 or so Guess’ products that Gucci claimed to infringe on their designs, majority of them “could never be confused with Gucci.”
