Geisinger Health System, a hospital in Pennsylvania, has announced it will no longer hire smokers and require employees to pass a nicotine test.
This will probably upset cigarette smokers, but let’s be honest, you shouldn’t be working in healthcare if you don’t care about your own health!
A spokeswoman for the hospital explained their decision by saying:
“Not only do we want to practice what we preach, but we also want our employees to feel healthy, we want our patients and visitors to feel that they are in a healthy environment. So it’s an overall commitment to the well-being of all those people.”
It sounds like a radical idea, but this kind of screening is not a new concept. In fact, there are 19 states that currently allow employers to do the same thing.
If we were in the business of keeping people healthy and living, we certainly would not want to hire someone who voluntarily breaths in dangerous chemicals that can eventually kill them!
